Currently on Day 10/11 of incubating in a homemade incubator. Despite some initial temperature and humidity fluxes in the first few days I candled yesterday and THERE IS QUAIL!

I couldn't believe it and candled again...hopefully this disturbance doesn't undo everything.

Is it possible they're molting? I had some late fall molts that caused two quail to get pecked at all of a sudden - had to seperate them indoors since it was getting below freezing and they had some bald spots where they had dropped the feathers and new shaft were poking through but it was too tempting to the other quail and they were pecking. Not a lot of damage by the time I noticed (I try and check on them every few hours) but a feather shaft had been broken/ripped out and was oozing blood for hours, looked like a massacre. Tried putting corn starch on it to stop the bleeding but it was quickly preened off

there's an awful lot of hopefully shed feathers in your picture so I am hoping it's a molt that's caused at least one other bird to try and peck at the bare spots / feather shafts/ dander and now blood.

Seperate the bald spot ones - might be able to do it together, mine didn't bother each other and recovered in about two weeks.

Can someone please help? This pic is of my second batch hatchlings, went out 15 mins ago to feed and noticed I have 5 like this. The feathers on their back are completely gone down to skin and it is raw and this is the worst he's even bleeding some. I thought I had all roosters separated, so is this caused by them fighting or is this something more serious like a sickness?

Hey again, I just noticed, is that a bunch of corn on the ground? What do you feed them? I ask because if things like corn are diluting their protein percentage requirements, quail can be apt to cannibalism

Ouch! That looks like severe fighting to me. I've had females fight with other females before. If you haven't already, separate them immediately. There is a dark blue antibiotic spray you can buy to spray on the wound. It helps them heal, prevents infection & the dark blue color hides the red wound that the others cant help but peck at. Good luck!

I keep mine in the same coop as the chickens, but they're completely separated.

I'm feeding them a 18% protein chick starter and a scratch feed that has laying mash, cracked whole wheat,sunflower, flint corn, and soy bean oil. So, should I change up the scratch feed with some that has no corn? I did not know that about corn. Thank you so much for that info.

I am new to BYC we have 10 chickens and are getting 20 Quail in a couple days. I want to build a nice coop for them that will be out side in the summer, I have a building they can be in in the winter.
would like to know what combination of hutch vs run it should be. I was thinking of making it like a rabbit hutch wire on one side, box on the other. I was going to make 2 putting 10 in each. Any ideas would be helpful.
