I have five Rhode Island Red hens an one Leghorn Rooster. I keep them in a semi-basement part of our barn. I got the chickens March 1st at which time they were 18 weeks old. Now all five hens lay an egg a day. I let them free range several hours a day. Many years ago the inside of the basement was painted and has been chipping for years. Also, since the barn was storage for various equipment and supplies there may be other chemicals in the dirt and brick that make up the floor. The chickens seem very health and happy so I see no ill effects.
After all that, please, if any one knows a place I can get the eggs tested for these problems I will be greatly appreciative. I've tried various searchs but can find no site that test chicken eggs. I am new to this site but am excited to have found BackYard Chickens!
