They are not immune to outsiders...Not sure what your talking about? All Chickens carry disease of some type.

Huh? So what you're trying to say is if you get new hatched chicks from hatchery or feed store they are carrying Mereks or some other chicken disease. NO, they are not.

Or are you trying to say they can catch something from a person's existing flock? Why yes, yes they can. But....a person with an existing flock would know what they carry.

Thanks for all your replies! The first chicks I'd get are silkies, so since they're smaller anyway, I figure that it actually might be better to give them an extra week to grow so they might be about the size of the standard chicks coming in.

Is it better to get them all on the exact same day?

I prefer to get mine all at once but I have added chicks of one week in age to chicks that were three weeks of age with very little issue.
