So I know mites/fleas are going to be bad this summer. In fact I have had to flea treat my dogs a month earlier than I usually would because the fleas are already jumping on them. So I made sand/DE bathing pits for both my chicks and adult Silkies. I also sprinkled it on the straw bedding yesterday.

Well today the chicks had kicked all the straw out of their side of the coop/nesting boxes. So I mixed some DE with pine shavings and put that in the boxes instead (they don't play with it/kick it around like the straw). But when I first put it in the coop I was worried when a few chicks pecked at and picked up some DE coated wood chips. I quickly layered a think layer of wood chips on top that were not coated with the DE so that if they felt the urge to peck at their bedding it wouldn't be the "medicated" bedding.

Should I worry about harm coming to the chicks that were pecking at the DE coated chips? It wasent like they were eating it. They were just investigating and carrying the occasional piece in their beaks.

If it's the food grade D.E. It will not hurt them, in fact it's edible. I mix it into the chick feed bins, this keeps all bugs out and mold from growing in it.

You just don't want to inhale the dust, can harm your lungs.....humans. Not chickens.

Okay good to know. I was very careful and wore a mask while working with the DE.
