A couple of years ago we got a pair of doves from a rescue. The female had many bald patches, so we asked about mites. The rescue group said they were treated and it is not mites. We did notice the male grooming her a lot, but we did not see the bald patches worsen, or get better. It seemed as if they were damage from something that happened a long time ago.
Anyhow, she recently passed away, and we got the male dove a new mate. Immediately, he began hopping around her and pecking at her. I've heard this happens with same-sex pairs due to being territorial, but not for a male-female pair. Anyhow, I have another set that were also introduced, and both the male and female immediately took to each other with no aggression.
I am now wondering if the original female dove (with the bald patches) was bald because of her male partner. Anyhow, we have removed the new female from his cage to keep her safe. Has anyone seen this when dove pairs have been introduced, or do I have a truly aggressive male dove? Any suggestions would be helpful. I tried to introduce them in a place other than his own cage, but that didn't work either. He immediately started pecking at her. Thanks.
