Question about black soldier fly larvae

That's what I've read too, @lazy gardener and I'm excited about the idea. I saw a pretty cool setup in a blog I read about it. So, once winter comes do you just leave it to freeze over? what happens in the spring? will it come back to life? or you need to start over again? also, what would you recommend for live animal protein in the winter? what would be suitable to manage and harvest indoors? You're always giving me great advice @lazy gardener I appreciate you!!

Frank, I can't help you with this, cause my ground is frozen almost 6 months of the year. Not a hospitable climate for BSFL. I ferment my feed, sometimes feed old meat from the freezer. My birds have access to deep composting litter year round (a sun room area that is closed in over part of the top and on 3 sides for solar gain.) And I sprout grains and BOSS.

I'm in west Michigan. pretty long, sometimes brutal winters with tons of snow. which brings a whole new venture soon with winterizing my Chicky poos. eh. But thanks guys I was suspecting that would be the case, but I am hopelessly positive at times LOL

I'm in Michigan also. I read that BSF will over winter and just take back off in the spring but not sure where the person who posted that info actually lives.

I'm going to try over wintering in a greenhouse but also going to keep some going in the house in jars like im doing right now.

One things about bugs, they are usually quite tough and can handle a freeze. We'll see.
