Maybe it's like the calico cat thing, but different gender?

You can find female calicos, but as with many colour patterns, the female pattern areas are different than the male pattern areas. Think of the differences in male and female BBR, wheaten, duckwing, pyle, etc. With females, the most noticeable pattern is on the breast, not the back or wings.

what is the make up of a calico... at first I thought it was a split silver gold gene... hence you never saw a hen of the colour...
