so sorry if this (or a subject along similar lines) has been asked before, but I was wondering if the size of an egg a hen would lay is determined by the size of the egg she hatched from. That sounds EXTREMELY confusing...so here's what I mean: I've always been planning to try a breeding project crossing gamefowl and larger chickens (RIR, BO, BR) to produce hens that are a little larger than game, but that can still fly pretty well, forage, lay better than the game, and set a large clutch. My idea was to use large roosters on game hens for the F1 cross, because I wanted to keep the medium egg size of the game while increasing body size of the hen= a larger broody that could set a very large clutch of medium sized eggs. I've always thought that if a chick hatched from a smaller egg, then when it grew and started laying, its eggs would also be smaller. So does this trait carry on like I assumed or would the pullets from a RIR roo x game hen cross lay larger eggs because of the RIR father genetics? Sorry if this seems pointless.

Think there are a very large number of factors that determine egg size vs body size. Any trait that is heritable, such as body size or egg size is likly able to be selected for.

Observations from my birds include: you can hatch chicks from pullet eggs and in the end they will grow up to regular adult size and lay regular size eggs. And body mass to egg size is not always porportinal. My JG's come in at like 7-8lbs per girl, their eggs are about the same size as my leghorns, who weigh no more than 4 lbs.
