Hi All, I'm writing a biology paper about chicken color genetics. One of the things I wanted to talk about was how new colors are developed. Since I LOVE lavender birds I thought I would focus on this color as an example. I have found quite a bit of info on improving lavender flocks but I'm having a little bit of trouble finding info on how you would start a lavender project from scratch. Can anyone explain to me a little bit about how you would develop the color if you had no lavender birds to begin with?

You wouldn't.

It was a fluke, one time, and since then is introduced into new breeds by cross-breeding w/Lavender carriers.

Interesting! No wonder I can't find any information

Thanks for clearing that up for me! Perhaps I will modify that section a little bit to look at how breeders take flukes of nature and work with it to create trait that can be bred for. I recall a thread on someone who randomly got a silkied roo, the breed of which I can't remember. It essentially became a breeding project amongst many members of BYC and there were a lot of trials and tribulations. That might be a really interesting thing to look at. I can't for the life of me find that thread now... Anyone remember that one?
