Question about buff silkies.....

I bought 9 silkies yesterday 7 buffs 1 light splash and 1 blue splash They are all great quality. The buff have a little bit of black in there tails (mostly the roosters). Is that a bad thing? They are really nice quality I just wasnt sure about the little bit of black in there tails.

It's normal for there to be a little black in splash or light blue occasionally. I don't think it counts as something bad in Silkie coloring. Buff will occasionally leak black because of dominant white being present, but there are other factors as well.

You will have a hard time getting buffs without some form of black in them. Some people try to get the black out by mating the buffs to a blue or splash, which will lighten the blacl to blue in the offspring, but still an off color. It is not desireable for a show bird at all, it should be clear buff, but it is a hard thing to get out of them. If your not planning on showing then I wouldnt worry about it. If its a tiny bit, I would show them anyway, if its an exceptional quality buff.

Black in the tail of a Buff Silkie would be a Fault in a show. The Standard calls a rich buff color throughout the surface. It is very hard to find Buff Silkie Roosters without some dark feathers in the tail. Your new birds may be great breeders if bred to a completely clear female.

How old are they? Black is seen in most buffs...as the bird ages, in many cases, with each molt, the amount of black decreases..so one year you may have one with a lot of black and within a year or two, the bird could end up being a nice clear buff. Don't give up on them quite yet

There are breeders who sell eggs on here in BST. I sell silkies too When I have them available. I am hatching now so will have some in the near future to sell. The price depends on the quality.

You can also check eggbid, there are often very nice birds and eggs for sale there. You could join the ASBC and get in contact with breeders through there. Subscribing to the poultry press would be worth it if you are interested in showing...they have many ads by breeders.
