Question about chicken behavior

I have a 2 gallon metal drinking water can for my chickens. They have taken to sitting on top of it and using it as a "toilet". Any advice on how to stop this behavior? Thank you!

There was a tool sale here last year and I bought a few of Big red Funnels for $1 each. Just slap one on the top of the water and they CAN'T get footing to stay up there.

I have also seen the funnels at $1 stores(dollar tree, mighty dollar, etc)

I hang a piece of clothesline (plastic covered wire) from the coop ceiling and hook it around the handle on the top. Works fine.

Funnels work, too, but you really need to glue them on, and then you can't get at the handle....

Well, assuming it has a handle on top....

Thank you for your advice! I have them in a mobile pen for the summer, so I can't really hang it from anything. But maybe the funnels will work.
