Question about deep litter method

O ok, I was curious how deep it was to be able to generate its own heat from decomposing, correct?

Not sure if there’s an absolute method.... I think as long as it’s deep enough to be mixed around, should be fine. The chickens mix it up themselves mostly; I just take a rake and mix up the big chunks they didn’t get to. I read not to mix DE in with it (as some people recommend) bc it dries it out too quickly to decompose properly.

I think your climate will also play a role in your deep litter success. In my experience, it worked great in Hawaii (hot and lots of sunshine) but no so great in Oregon (wet. Wet all the time. Ugh)
