I have a Golden Comet Rooster and Golden Comet Hens. I spoke to a lady wanting fertile eggs, she said that you can't hatch these hybrid birds. Is this true? Thanks ~Becky

yes you can hatch them, they just wont be sexlinked they will be mutts. (still very pretty though) I have both golden comet AND golden comet X golden comet hatching eggs in the incubator now.

The golden comets are ofcourse sex linked

but the golden comet x golden comets are "mongrels" someone told me they should look very simliar to a RIR

Sex-linked is their first generation that's why they're called a hybrid. You can get it a few several different ways.

Golden Comets are from breeding an RIR roo to a White Leghorn hen, or another silver carring white or silver hen

Edited to add: roo has to be red (so RIR or NHR), and the hen has to carry silver to get Golden Comets (red sex link)
To get black sexlink the roo has to be RIR or NHR and the hen has to have the barred or cuckoo gene.

Barred rock, or Marans for example.

Golden comets the roo and the hens arent the right color to produce a sex link

Rir Rooster X white rock = golden comet
rir rooster X white leghorn = red star

All red or golden chicks pullets, all rooster white.

comet X comet = both color in pullets and rooster

i gotcha now - this is our first year, sorry for all the questions. I was a little confused. But I got it now. RIR rooster X with White Rock will get me a Golden Comet.

Thanks a bunch.

Golden comet is just a name though some people call RIR x White Leghorn hen Golden comet as well. I do because thats what's normally accepted. I think of them all as the same thing. They dont breed true but are sexlinked by the same genes soo! LOL
