Question about hatching in an automatic turner

I used the cardboard cartons and also placed a wet sponge in on the grate. Make sure you you poke holes in the bottom of the egg cups so the eggs get air circulation! When I tried laying the eggs on their sides i started with 6 live eggs and only got 3 hatched because as the first chicks hatched, they were bouncing the others and spinnng them all over the place so the chicks would never be able to orient themselves! They were like they were in little bumper cars! I think when they tried to pip, they got drowned in the fluid because one of them managed to pip but was gasping and gurgling for air and did not make it. i was so upset because they were seramas and everyone says how difficult the survival rate for them is, so when I candled them on their due dates and saw they were thriving, I ended up with only 3 of 6 and that was sad for me!

Oh my gosh, that is very sad. I am glad you were able to get three to hatch though. How frustrating when you were so close.

I use both. and no the paper ones do not get soggy.. I have most of them going through their 4th and 5th batches..

Here is what I do. I cut the bottoms out of each cup about flush with the web that holds them together. then I cut the little "castles" off on the top side.
throw away the top lid..

there is just enough carton left to hold the eggs apart and keep them standing on end.. I want all the airflow I can get around the eggs..

I have 3 sportsmans running most of the time from early spring (geese) through august(everything else).. Last year we had eggs hatching the first week of december.. not going to do that again.. raised 7 turkeys in the house......kids, don't try this at home..

I line the metal trays in each sportsman with the egg cartons..

I also have some of those plastic egg holders..

I hope this helps
