A 'friend' (she wants to be my friend but is exceedingly needy) was having this problem, she showed me her nest boxes and they were about 14 inches off the floor and her hens were laying under them. My thoughts were 'this is where the babies are going to hatch (in hen thought) how would they ever get down? I didn't see any problem with where hers were laying, as long as you know where they are and they don't get too soiled.
