Question about installing a fan in the coop.

;O)

The point I was trying to help you understand was about drafts
If you've ever been in a commercial op when you open the door there is so much suction it about tears your arm off and when inside you can feel the massive airflow all around you.

It's not only to "cool" but to exchange air and get the ammonia from the chicken urine out of there.

A "draft" would be what a chicken would encounter when they are perhaps on their roost and cold outside air is blowing through the cracks in the wall or even an open door.
It would be the same for you and me.
the type of situation that may cause hypothermia.

Looking at your pics, you need more windows, you can cut them out, use the cutout as a shudder to close up in colder times, and put rabbit wire over the opening for protection.

An environment that is comfortable for you, is also ideal for a chicken.

We have a window fan in our bedroom that has 2 fans that can be controlled individually. One can be an exhaust and one can pull air in. It is made by holmes and we bought our at menards.

OK, if your outdoor nighttime lows are still around 90 or so (man, I am SO never moving down there! LOL) then a fan might do some good, it will not cool the coop any if the coop is already the same temperature as the outdoor air (which will be the case if you are well-enough ventilated) but it can provide a bit of comfort for the chickens.

The test of whether your coop is well enough ventilated, in this case, is simply "is the temp inside the coop higher than the temp outside". If it is warmer inside than out, it isn't ventilated well enough. I am skeptical of the amount of ventilation from its looks, but you can do the actual test with a thermometer in the evening and that will tell you for sure whether you need more open area

Good luck, have fun,

Got it...and I was just teasing about the quality of life comment!

The double fan thing is a great idea! I am going to do a modification on one of the sides and install that fan in there. I think that is the best idea yet, and should be plenty of ventilation. As for the temperatures being hotter inside than outside, that isn't the case. It is actually cooler inside the coop than outside, but only by a couple of degrees. Another thing here is the humidity, so some kind of air circulation will help a little. I will let y'all know how this works out. They aren't going outside for another week or so anyway, I just want to make sure everything is perfect for my babies!
