I have 2 older Lavender orphingtons that are 8 weeks old. I also have a smaller group that is about 3 1/2 weeks. Why are the older girls combs so dark and small in comparison to the younger groups?

Likely because you have all males in the youngest group, while the older ones are all females.
However, in the smallest group, looks like 1 (the one in the back) is a pullet, while the rest are indeed cockerels (from what I can see...)

You're kidding right?🤣🤣😫

I wish!
Hopefully someone else comes along to verify.. but to me, yes, most of the younger ones seem to be cockerels.. :) good luck
I currently have 7 with another one of my silkies being confirmed today on here to be one so that is 8. Now add another 3...I give up

LOL!
Now that @Chookwagn says there are 2 males, I looked closer and hereby verify that that is true for the lavenders  but the black orpington's comb is not visible to identify gender. iif you'd like, take more pics of all of them
