Having just had to bring one girl inside the house for a little bit to clean up a wound (she yanked one of her claws completely off!

) and wait for it to stop bleeding, I was wondering how people approach their medical coops (in the case of non-contagious, non-life-threatening problems). Is it better to have a medical coop near the main coop so the sickie can hear the other birds and not feel too isolated? Or would being able to hear but not get to/be with the others just cause more stress? Again, this is in the context of situations where you need to separate a bird to keep the others from bothering a wound or something along those lines. How do you guys handle this?

As always, your thoughts are most appreciated! Thanks!

I use a dog crate thing, so I can either have it inside the coop or put it inside the garage depending on the weather and circumstances.
If the weather is good, I like to have it in the garage, and then pull it out during the day so they can still be outside and social when the other animals are free ranging. If it's cold or I have them restricted to the run portion only, then I leave the carrier in the coop. But this gives me flexibility. The crate I got from a landfill that someone had thrown away, but I've seen many on craigslist as well for very reasonable!

I use a cage, similar to a rabbit cage. The one time we had to use it (for a ripped off tonail too - what were the chances!) we just brought it into the house and put it in the upstairs bathroom. That way she was close to us and I could keep a good eye on her.

Thanks, everyone, for your suggestions!

Calicokat, how long did it take for the toe to heal? I'd like to let her stay with the others if possible, as long as the bleeding doesn't re-start. Keeping it clean is going to be a challenge.
