Question about lockdown

I have seen a lot of discrepancy on humidity too Trying to be safe i had it at around 50 -ish then the last week or 10 days had it about 40-45 sort of in the middle ! I am worried about lockdown getting it to 65 and staying.I do have a styrafoam incubator so someone told me early on to put a hole with a staw in it and add water with a big syringe then I clamp it shut after with a wood clothespin. so idont open it.
Hope it helped get me baby chicks So much seems to be able to go wrong.

Good luck, let me know how it goes. What are you hatching out? I will let you know how ours goes. :0)

Since I started having quite a few drowned chicks. I started doing dry hatches and had much better luck. I still up it for lockdown. Try laying sponges in the water and it should increase the humidity. Happy Hatching

Right now I think I am to high. It is about 75%. I hope it comes down some before they start hatching. I think I put in to much water. Last time I did a hatch people were telling me I needed to be around 80 and that just seems kind of high to me. I have both the little vents open and I am hoping that helps to bring it back down some. What do ya'll think the humidity should be at?

75% is on the high side. It's not a problem to open lid if there are no external pips. Open it for a second, lift lid and let out humidity then close. Shoot for 60% and know that once they pip and zip it will rise quite a bit. Still shoot to keep it under 65%.

Shrink wrapping is over worried about. If your home is not desert dry then there is little chance of shocking the membrane tight. If you lived in New England right now you'd have no fear as it's been raining and will continue to do so all week.

Eggs start rocking day 18 to 19. It's that motion that gets the broody to not move off nest any longer until they hatch. We use that timing to up humidity as that's what occurs in nature as the hen is on nest 24 hours at that point.

Thanks, the humidity keeps going back and forth between 69 and 70%. Still no pips or zips so I might open it and take out a wet napkin I had put in there to help keep up the humidity. It feels like something should be happening by now. If you are right the rocking and 18 to 19 day thing it still might be a day or two before I see any real action. :0)

Egghead_Jr, I am very new at this and have just done my first hatch and getting ready for second. I have a question just for general information so maybe I won't screw something up?
While re-setting my still air bator I had the temp holding good and then started on humidity. Of course I got it really high and squeezed out the sponges," way to much". After a bit it was still to high so I opened both vents trying to let it dry out some and not flux my temp. This worked pretty well and didn't take long for the humidity to come down.
Question is: Would this theory work better and not having to open it if I get to much later in hatch or would it be to slow dropping humidity and I really need to open lid to let it escape faster?
There is no silly question except the one not ask, but this one might be the exception to the rule? lol

Here is what I found on my styrofoam bator: If humidity is too low open just enuf to get a spray bottle nozzle in & spray the LID of the bator a couple times with hot water to raise it quickly. If your eggs are looking dry you can also lightly spray them as well. If you get if WAY too high, lift the lid for a few seconds & close it back up. Check every 10-15 minutes & repeat until it stabilizes where you want it.
