I owned two buff orpingtons and they were the most amazing friendliest chickens. They were quiet and docile which this breed is known for. I am moving to a smaller home and property, the neighbors are closer. So it will be important that I have chickens that tend to be quiet. I was considering a flock of 3 orpingtons. Here is the question... I only knew of the buff orpington. I have discovered that there are a variety of colors of orpingtons, even a blue and lavender. Are these other colored orpingtons a mix breed? I question this because then I wonder if they will have the same docile, quiet personality as the buff orpington that I am familiar with? In the past our chickens were our pets so I would like to be able to tell them apart. Having three that are different in color would be great but I am looking for the personality that is known for in the buff orpington.

They are the same breed, just color. You do have the chance of getting a loud Orpington, but all in all they do tend to be like you described. Warning - Do not get a black sex-link - the ones I have are very talkative! It isn't a problem here in the country, but it might be for you.
