Question About Roosters

Hi guys,
So, to our knowledge, we have one definite rooster (a cute male sebright) amid 24 definite hens. My dad thinks my little Nike (the sebright) will harass the hens when he gets older. I don't think he will, as I think that there are plenty of hens so none will be harassed. Also, I have read that sebright males tend to be protective of their hens, so I think it'll be a good thing to keep him around. A bit of info: we live outside of city limits, so rooster are allowed. And I'm afraid that if I can't convince my dad and mom that the rooster is a fine addition to our flock, that they will kill him. Either way, he is almost 2 months old, and the oldest of our hens is almost 3 months old. He is also below them on the Peking order, any advice with what to do?
Thanks in advance!

He'll probably try to harass the hens at first. Cockerels do that. What breed are your hens?

If he's a good boy, he'll soon settle down and begin being a peacekeeper within the flock. Also, if they're older than he is, they'll probably keep him in line just fine by themselves. Especially with that many of them. Of course, every individual flock differs...

All young males do that, the hens are a month older then him and he has at the bottom, their very likely to teach him how to behave and as he matures he will climb the order and make for a great guy.

If you wanna practically skip over that stage, put him in a cage and he can learn how to properly handle the hens, but eight months you then can let him out with them.

We have: 7 golden comets, 3 Barred rocks, 1 black Australorp, 1 black jersey giant, 2 Orpingtons, 1 Blue jersey giants, 1 Rhode Island Red, 2 Chanteclers, 1 Golden laced Wyandotte, 3 silver laced Wyandotte, and 1 female sebright. Aside from the RIR, blue jersey giant and Chanteclers, they are all older. Oh, and the female sebright is the same age as the cockerel.

Roos seem crazy for their first 9 months then seem to settle down. After that a good roo will be a good protector of the hens and show them where food or nesting areas are. Some can be quite sweet.

Yeah... I think your girls should be fine. They are big girls.

If it bothers you (as it does me) to see my girls beat up,, then I would place him in a bachelor pad (in site of the flock) at 4 months old, keeping him there until the teenage stage passes, about 12 months old. The older girls will certainly teach him how to act either way.
That said I have had 1 rooster on the flock at 4 months old, he is now 6 YO. He was then and is still good with the girls. Some were 2 years older than him,,,he was hatched and raised in the flock, and took over when the head rooster got killed.
