Question about rotating....

Okay, I've pondered this a few times....I have not, so no fear there, but what would happen if you rotated an egg by vertically flipping it (say the blunt end was pointing south, flipping it so the blunt end pointed north) versus rotating it horizontally, like we're all told to. Just kinda curious if it would harm the chick or not.

Also: How do people rotate them? My first go around with hatching, I was told to rotate them to the left, then the next time, to the right, and then again to the left the third time, etc etc etc so as not to over-wind the chalazae. Anyone put stock in this? Again, just curious.

And lastly. *whew* I candled my little eggs again tonight (we're now on day 12), and most were 'swimming' eagerly and energetically. A few were sluggish, but still rotating around in there and moving. Two were very still, but the blood vessels are still connected. Any ideas? Do the embryos sleep? *ponders* I marked them, and am gonna check them again before bed, but I figured I'd see what everyone else thought.

Hi! When I'm turning eggs, there are a few that get turned 'end-over-end' as opposed to a 'exact-third-turn-side-to-side', just because that's the way they are in a row and my hands-a-flipping go there.
Frankly, my eggs I turn are lucky to get turned every 12 hrs. I shoot for turning them every 8 hrs, but hardly ever do.
On the other hand, my pal was turning eggs 5 times in a 24 hr period and couldn't figure why none of her eggs hatched...

Hello,
I turn mine left then flat then to the right. You want to make sure that it is always odd # of times. The chicks do sleep. I found if you very lightly tap the egg with a fingernail sometimes they will move just enough that you know they are alive. They sound good to me. Best of luck to you. Hope they all make it.
