If I were to cross a legbar with a black leghorn would I get a black feathered SBEL? I really want some SBEL's but dont really like the white feathers... Would it be possible to get a Blue feathered SBEL or Lavander feathered SBEL? Also when crossing for a SBEL, does the roo have to be the blue egg layer or the hen, or does it not matter?

Thanks in advance for any and all help,
John.

If you cross a blue egg layer with a white egg layer, you're pretty much going to get blue eggs. Lots of crosses are possible.

It's the "super" part that involves the white leghorn. Nothing can beat them for sheer production. You can use other breeds of leghorns or other white egg layers but won't get the volume of the production bred whites.

That said, I've crossed brown leghorns to my Easter eggers and been very happy with the offspring hens. They lay large light green eggs like crazy and have been some of my best layers.

It doesn't matter which parent has the blue gene as far as I know. I'd say pick your breeds, then the one that's harder to find--white or blue--get your rooster of that breed and the hens of the other.

What's an SBEL?

What's an SBEL?

Super Blue Egg Layer.

To answer the original question - it depends. If the CCL is the hen, you will get black sex links that lay blue eggs. Male chicks will have a white dot on their head. Those males will grow out colored like a barred rock (black with white barring). If you do the cross the other way (CCL roo). the chicks will not be sex linked, but will all be black with a white spot (and feathers black with white barring).

3 are my new SBELs and the other 12 are white Plymouth Rocks ordered for a friend. I can pick out 2 of my SBEL’s, but the third is a mystery! Any suggestions on how to figure out which is my 3rd SBEL? Also, I really was hoping for a gray SBEL. Is there any chance that I will get a gray or am I just going to have a white and 2 speckled SBEL’s?
