***** Warning**** This question may sound stupid **** I know nothing of genetics ******

Which is why I just ask you people.

I want to get some Lavender Orpingtons.

Do I want ones that say, "NO Splits". Or ones that say, "splits".

I think that splits means I could get the black bird with the lavender gene. But I don't know which is better to purchase, splits or no splits.

Thanks!

If you buy Lavender Orpingtons then you wont be getting splits. The lavender color requires two lavender alleles to have a physical expression. Blacks can be carrying lavender -- the ones that do are called "splits".

Ok, so I want to stay away from the listing that says "splits".

You said that perfectly thank you.

You have me sitting here thinking now.. So then 2 black/lav splits COULD produce Lavenders OR more splits...right?

Correct. 25% black (not carrying lavender hence non-splits), 50% black "splits", and 25% lavender.

you could get one that arent split because they have best type i make my own splits to improve type

Thanks for the responses. I'm new to genetics but have printed off a Bunch of stuff to read. I should have paid more attention in Biology class!

Two blacks that are split to lavender will have approximately 25% lavender chicks, 25% blacks that are not split and 50% blacks that are split to lavender. You will not be able to distingueis between the blacks as to which are split to lavender and which are not.

Thanks for that.
