I have 6 chicks right now, all hens (ameracauna, buff orpington, jersey giant, astralorp, isa brown, and a wyandotte). were starting the coop tommorrow and had a few questions!

Roosts:
  1. how high should it be? i know my orpington, and jersey giants are pretty big, so i guessing it can't be to high.
  2. whats best material to use? should it be round or a rectangler peice of wood?
  3. how "thick" should it be around? i dont know how much there toes can curl around!

if anyone knows anything about this, i would apreciate it! thanks!

You're sure to get a lot of opinions on this one. I personally use natural seasoned cedar about 2½ - 4 inches in diameter. In my old coop, I used 2x2's and 1½" dowels... they preferred the dowels over the 2x2's.

I used 2x4 on the flat. I made a couple of levels about 14 inches horizontally apart and a foot high per level. The older chickens use it, all crowded as close to the top as possible. The 10 week old chickens still pile up on the floor.
