Question for gardeners ***UPDATE PG 3***

thanks for the good ideas. I think I'll start soaking a few seeds today (if I can find them

Peas are apt to rot in cold wet soil. Yeah, I know they're a cool season crop, but even so. If you used untreated seed I betcha anything that's what happened. Even if you used treated seed, the middle of March would be INSANELY early to plant peas up here and we are not *that* different from you climatically. Was it in pre-warmed fairly sandy soil, or was it in cold clayey soil?

I read that it is ok to plant peas when your lilacs have leaves the "size of mouse ears." (whatever that means, as I don't chase after mice with a ruler in my hand). ANYWAY, if you have a lilac, they can sense the soil temp and will indicate if it is warm enough to plant peas.

I live in western PA and I was told March as soon as the soil is work able, and mine are just poping up now and the where planted 3/15. So I would just what and see if they don't come up in two weeks I would say replant.
P.S. snow hit here after they where planted too.

after living in Fla for 16 years, everything HAD to be planted by Easter, Moving to Tennessee, I just assumed the same but have learned that here we have 7 small winters, and you don't plant anything until after blackberry winter. It is now dogwood winter, so i am waiting (not patiently) for blackberry winter to come.Lastyear I had to plant my tomatoes 3 times, and don't plan on doing that this year if I have to wait until May to plant.

The soil is gorgeous. It's a mixture of sand and well-composted horse manure. It's light and fluffy, and we've had amazing luck with it so far. We've just never tried peas before.

Thanks Cat. I won't give up yet.
