Question for grocery store cashiers!

Cashiers now have part of their performance reviews based on checking speed. How may items or $ per minute or hour.

I worked 20+ years at Safeway doing my share of cashiering and running the speed reports for each employee.

Some checkers are, shall we say overly concerned with each second wasted.
We had one who would just demand that the little baskets be emptied. Well, I would go through her line, wait and make her tell me to empty my basket. After I emptied it, I would turn the basket upside down over the pile, making sure something caught the handles so she had to waste precious seconds untangling my stuff.

That is one reason. Another could be attention to repetitive injury prevention, too. I never thought it was a big deal.

The grocery store people hate me, because when I buy 4 items, they can figure out a way to put them in 5 bags. So, I rebag them. While in line.

We do that too. Sometimes they just don't think.

My first job was as a cashier in a Grocery Store, but that was %&8^ something years ago...... We did not have the hand carry baskets, only carts, therefore the customers emptied them. We also had no paper or plastic, only paper. No scanners, so we had to key in each item.... I can still do 10 by touch..... So really I have no clue and did not answer the question, Sorry

Although back then we had an older guy for a manager and your review was pretty much based on how well the uniform fit

When I was a checker, 13-20 years ago, we had people empty the basket after a woman had a major fit as a checker picked up frozen meat that was on top, then touched a loaf of bread. As in a fit that wound up with the cops being called.

I usually empty the basket onto the belt. I have shoulder issues, and I like to think it saves the cashier from having to keep reaching over and into the basket to get stuff out.

Am I missing something, here? It has never crossed my mind to force the cashier to empty my basket for me....I'm usually standing in line, behind someone else and have plenty of time to expedite the situation, then, I place the basket on the floor, at the end of the belt.

You are missing nothing. A good cashier will follow the customer's lead. If the customer wishes to empty the basket that's fine. If the customer doesn't wish to or cannot, the cashier needs to do it. It's called customer service. Serving the customer.
