I recently lost a hen that someone gave us awhile back. We never did know for sure whether she was a Colombian or a Delaware (her markings looked like either or both), but she was a terrific hen and I'd like to have a few more at some point. Can some of our breed experts explain the difference? The one thing that I can say for her is that she was massive- a really big hen that laid brown eggs. Any help is appreciated.

You mean Columbian Rock? Delawares have barred hackles, not solid black like a lt Brahma would have. On a hen's skinny hackle feathers, it looks more like stippling than barring. They would both have black tail feathers.

Thank you, Speckledhen. That sure does look like her. Her hackle feathers were hard to define- they looked "dirty" for lack of a better word. Possibly, she was just a not very well marked Delaware. But the head and legs are the same as the picture. Much appreciated.
