Question for those making homemade chicken feed.

One thing to remember is that most things have a really wide range of possible protein/fat percentages and you have to take what you actually have at hand into account when figuring out what you are feeding.
I really like the idea of adding some sort of vitamin or supplement mix.

TwoCrows, I get the same thing you do using your numbers, did yours quick since you had the protein listed. columns are out of whack when I paste it into here, but the numbers come out the same.
ing lbs ing % pr pr% fat fat%
wheat 3.00 31.58% 11.00 3.47 0.00 0.00

This is the spreadsheet I use, can't figure out how to put a live spreadsheet on here so just wrote out the formulas.
You can adjust it to whatever you need.

Excel spread sheet that calculates protein & fat % of feed mix.
Columns are A through G and Rows are 1 through 15.
Format column C as Percentage, the rest as Number.
You need the protein and fat content of the ingredients you want to use.

Columns:
Column A is the ingredient (ie corn, wheat, oats).
B is the total lbs of the ingredient you want to use, you enter this.
C is the % of mix said ingredient is, spreadsheet figures this.
D is the protein of the ingredient, you enter this.
E is the protein % said ingredient is, spreadsheet figures this.
F is the fat of the ingredient, you enter this.
G is the fat % said ingredient is, spreadsheet figures this.

Row formatting
For a 15 Row sheet with 13 possible ingredients for example.
Row 1 is the headers as listed above columns A through G.
Rows 2- 14 are the various ingredients (don’t have to fill or use all of these)
Row 15 is the totals.

Formulas for cells in rows 2-14 … for the #2 substitute whatever # row it is you are on.
Row #2 is:
column B… no formula, enter # of ingrediant
C…=(B2/B15)
D… no formula, enter protein
E…=(D2*C2)
F…no formula, enter fat
G…=(F2*C2)

formulas for totals, row 15 in this case
column B…=Sum(B2:B14) (this is the total pounds of food)
C…=Sum(C2:C14) (this should add up to 100%)
E…=Sum(E2:E14) (this is the fat of the total feed mix)
G…=Sum(G2:G14) (this is the protein of the total feed mix)

You could actually use this kind of spread sheet for anything including vitamins and minerals.

Thanks Kelsie. Good to know I am doing this right. LOL Yes, it is very important to add vitamins, minerals, amino acids, ect...as they not only add to the health of the bird, but certain vitamins and amino acids are needed to allow the bird to break down and absorb proteins and calcium. So look for a good formula you are comfortable adding.

Oh, and I got really confused using that spread sheet as well, so I used my own methods. LOL

Quote: Perfect ........ you are very smart ........ have you taken advanced math classes ? algebra , trig , etc?

I've been using the same method for about 40 years .. i did just like you figuring parts of the whole represented as percentage .

Good work ,
Shannon
Thanks Shannon! Good to know I did this right. LOL And yes, I have done way too much math in my time, algebra and trig, so it just made sense to me, but hearing from someone else that it IS done right makes me feel better. :)
