I have 2 LG's that I use as hatchers mostly but I have used them on many occassions to incubate because the other bators were full. They have always worked great for me.
The red plugs.....no matter what I am hatching when I use these bators I always leave the plug closest to the front of the bator out from day 1 thru 18 and remove the other one on day 18.

Hope this helps.

I have a still air LG & just hatched 23 or 25 eggs. I remove the cap closest to the thermostat area day 1-18 & when the chicks start (yes day of) to hatch I remove the other.

Lockdown is the last three days of incubation Day 18 is lockdown for chicken eggs and day 21 is hatch day. You stop turning the eggs at lockdown and you raise your humidity. You also don't open the bator until the hatch is complete or you risk shrink wrapping your remaining chicks in their eggs.

ETA... I leave both plugs out, seems easier to keep a more even temperature throughout the incubator. I just have to watch the humidity more. I am new to hatching and am still learning what is right for me and my environment. My cat took off with one of the red plugs too so I couldn't use it if I needed to right now. I have a forced air LG with a turner.

I was unexpectedly give an LG still air and am frantically searching thru the threads for information. I tossed the thermometer that came with it (2 degrees low!) and am calibrating the hygrometer. I keep reading about trays, but this just has a styro bottom. I'm going to add weather stripping between the top and bottom as I've read that this will help keep temp/humidity more stable and would like to use sponges for humidity and hatch in cut-down egg cartons. My burning question is what should the temp be in a still air and where should the thermometer be placed? I'm also hoping to be able to elevate one side of the bator and then the other instead of opening it up all the time to turn the eggs. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

To the OP--Please pm me if you would rather I try to start a new thread for this. It kinda goes with what you're asking so I'm trying to avoid a duplication of effort, but I'm happy to move it if you think my questions will move things in the wrong direction.

Temp in a still air should be 99.5 but once in a while I've left it alone if it is running at about 100 or 100.5 because that little knob is so touchy on the LG's that when you think you didn't move it......you actually did.

I tossed those thermometers too, I use some regular old thermometers that I know are accurate and taped them to that piece of plastic that the one that came with the bators was on and it goes on top of my eggs. I also have the therm/hygro but it sits wherever it will fit.

Randall, I have LG 9200 also and the directions weren't very clear on which red plug to remove, I was a little confused myself but my husband and I decided to remove the one closest to the cord coming out of the bator.
