Question from a friend about eggs

A friend asked my a question that I can not answer since it never happened to me.

He got an egg that he said had a grayish haze around the yolk what is that? My guess was that it may be old.
What do you all say.

I think He tossed it. I never had one like that. I just thought it would be nice to find out for him.
