I am learning to tell Canadian accent from American accent. I am thinking that if the person sounded almost like American, but not quite, then it is a Canadian accent

Easy. If they apologize or say "eh", or "Aboot", they're Canadian.

Often. People can't place it, or recognise parts and wonder how that fits in with the rest. It changes a lot depending on where I am and who I'm talking to.

Yes, I was asked if my accent was south GA by someone from Massachusetts. Which was crazy because I'd never met the person and he knew where I was from just from the way my draw sounded!

I can pin folk of my dad's generation down to the specific part of the town he grew up in within a sentence or two of first hearing them speak.

I will remember this. We have more people from America and Canada in Australia now, and I am learning to guess the accent

My mother told me that when I was little, that a kid on the playground asked if I was American because of my accent. I still have an odd mix of Pennsylvania and Brooklyn.
