So many thoughts! There was a magpie in a park once. .. someone had left part of a peanut butter sandwich in a baggie in a paper bag on the table where I was eating. As I ate my lunch at that table, this bird flew down and tore up the paper bag. It was maybe two feet from me. Then it got to the sandwich in the bag but no matter how it tried it could not get through the plastic. Finally it hopped over and looked at me, then hopped back to the sandwich, looked at it and looked at me. It did this about three times until I laughed out loud. Then I opened the bag and tore the sandwich in pieces. It stayed there and enjoyed its lunch beside me. I'd love to spend a week with that bold little bird. Or a lifetime. I was really sad when I had to leave, with my two Shelties, who sat and watched the whole thing.

Magpies are incredibly intelligent. They have been known to make and use tools, grieve, and work in groups. They can also imitate noises and have actually tricked humans
