I thought rocks grew when I was 4-5.

I knew about minerals in rainwater and one day I saw some workers blasting rock near the road. I put two and two together and assumed that every few years, workers came by and trimmed the rocks back.

I will not tell you how long it took before I found out that this was untrue because it would be very embarrassing.
