Yeah, this is me. I talk to them like they are people and understand me and mostly they do. Like if one of the dogs has something in their mouth I'll say, What have you got? And they'll drop it and look at me. Now how do they know I'm talking to them and not one of the humans in the house? But they do. They know Move and Go away, Go to your room and other commands but they also just know (or seem to know) general conversation. And they talk to me too, with their eyes and body language. Sammy (Sheltie) is a past master at asking for a frozen pumpkin ball when he wants one.

I don't get out much, lol.

I know; my family tells me dogs can't understand conversation, but I say they can. Each can tell when I'm talking to them, even if I don't say their names.

My aunt had a dog named Sammy. I haven't heard that name in awhile.

He's registered as a somebody-or-other's Sunny. When we got him I said no way am I calling a male dog Sunny. So he became Sammy.

But I'll go you one better, not only do I believe they can understand a lot of our conversation, I think they can "see" the pictures in our heads. This is not exactly right, I lack the language to properly express what I mean. And I know they pick up the vibes of our emotions, and I don't even have to explain that. IYKYK.
 
I can talk to my hens cos they know their names, when they are scratching about, and I call the name, the hen that has been called looks up and comes to me 😁
Don’t have a youtube account, or I could show you, sadly, my favorite hen got bumble foot and is being treated for it every day by me, she used to come when called and eat from my hand, now, when I come she starts hiding or running ( limping) away 😟
