Grocery store asparagus is pre cut.Okay, I have always read/heard that I'm supposed to cut or break off the woody ends of asparagus, but in all the time I've been buying asparagus I haven't found any part of it that seemed too tough or inedible? Do groceries and farmers markets sell them pre cut? Is this something I'll only encounter after I start harvesting my own next season? Or is my family eating "woody" ends without noticing? On the few occasions I've had asparagus at restaurants and other folks' homes I haven't noticed any difference between the texture of their asparagus vs. mine, so what on earth is this "end" that I'm supposed to be getting rid of?
If you break it where it wants to break there is very little if any waste. I can see that some people still need to cut it to please themselves with how the cut looks vs the break.Cut, the break thing wastes a bit
Who cares if you waste a little when you grow as much as I do. I really like asparagus but it is so demanding. It says: "I'm ready now! Pick me now or you won't get any more until next year."That's what this guy says:

I run out of people to give it to because they want it when they want it and not when it needs picked.

I just cut a half inch off the ends where it's dry, but mine gets roasted so that may make a differenceIf you break it where it wants to break there is very little if any waste. I can see that some people still need to cut it to please themselves with how the cut looks vs the break.
