Question of the Day - Tuesday, November 12th, 2024

I made a mistake here recently with a boat load of POTS lines used for faxes. They had jacked the price up 300%, and I was talked into going voip for them, which cut them to a fraction of the cost. I mean fraction of the cost of a POTS line even before they started jacking the price up. Turns out voip lines don't work very well for faxes, though. They are fine for voice, but the fax is another story entirely. I am actively in the middle of this mess right now. Some faxes come through fine, others don't come at all, and still others send partial faxes such as a 50 page fax and you get 5 pages of it.

From what I have been told by some is that the companies are trying to compress them to save bandwidth which in turn saves them money. So, that will work for voice calls, but it doesn't cut it with faxes. So, it is a mess and has me stressed out trying to deal with it. Making conducting business very hard across our 4 businesses.

Here it is CenturyLink. It is only in recent years that they finally began offering high speed Internet out here.
At the town of one of our off campus clinics there is a Mom and Pop Telco company that I know the guy that was the owner. His family had started it back in the day. They offer internet as well, and have pretty much have everything on fiber now. They now also offer voip as well as hosted phone systems for businesses. However, you can still get POTS lines for residence and business and at great prices.

I really like having the company there where I can walk in and talk to them. And, being that I knew the owner, and all the techs, made it even better. But, then, he decided to sell, and the company was going to keep him on to run it. Then, last year we were at a volleyball game watching our daughters teams play against each other and talking about some things I wanted to do with them. We made plans for me to come to his office the next day to get it rolling. I show up the next morning and they told me that he had been fired. I couldn't believe it. He had no idea they were going to do that. I talked to him recently at another volleyball game and he is still fuming. I don't know why he didn't get a contract with them.

But, I have now at least formed a relationship with the guy they hired to run it, and he is a good guy.

But, I like the m & p telco companies, but there are not many left, and never was a lot of them.
