question on a particular driving scenario - your thoughts?

If both parties (on opposing sides of the intersection) are stopped waiting for a break in traffic....then the vehicle travelling straight has the right of way.

Now, being the nice Canadian girl that I am...I always wave the other driver through.

Do unto others....

Sometimes us canadians will be several seconds waving eachother through before someone finally decides to go...

Yeah, that must be pretty common here in Michigan, too, at least in the rural areas. We are likely to wave people through an intersection, to walk across the street, etc.

Michigan is almost like Canada at times, especially during Red Wings season.

Thanks everyone... I do let others in/go ahead most places. In thinking about it, this is something I've encountered during commuting hours when most are in some kind of rush... the commuting mentality is very different from weekend driving around (mine included).

But, I will try to signal the other driver to go ahead when I'm in doubt in the future...

Well, in my opinion, I'd say safety wise treat it as a two-way stop. Whoever gets there first has the right of way. Sure, if there's no sign, the person going straight has the right of way, but what if, at the stop sign, the person turning doesn't have their signal on? What if the person going straight DOES have their signal on and decides not to turn at the last minute? When you're moving, there's less question about whether a person is going straight or turning. And I'd write a letter to the engineer's office (or circulate a petition) and get them to legally clarify it for everyone, by using more signs, or whatever.

At a four way stop with 2 blinking reds and 2 blinking yellows. The reds HAVE to stop whether they're going straight or not. The yellows proceed with caution.

The person going straight has the right of way over the person's who's turning.

You shouldnt wave people through. If you wave them through, and they dont look, and a car hits them, you are responsible.

That might be true if I were a dummy who didn't know enough to make sure the way was clear before offering to the other driver to go ahead. Geesh...I wouldn't want anyone to get hurt because they didn't look and I was trying to be nice, nor would I want my kids to see that. Furthermore...in such a senario as you've described...I'm also not stupid enough to admit I waved someone the "no, you go, I'll go next". Law of "she said, he said'. Prove it buster.

Thank you for the words of caution though I'm not about to change my behavior based on what ifs.

I totally agree with this.....but i would like to add something i learned when i got my motorcycle license. The 'right of way' is nothing more than a courtesy. It is not a law. I think it should be a law because people these days are not so courteous
