After finally gettin "rid" of my horrible agressive, attacking red sex link roo. I got another rooster. Having heard that black australorps were docile I was pleased to get this sweet guy.

However, the guy said he was close to a year old? I find that hard to believe as he still has a teenage body look......not real filled out kinda leggy. He also does not have spurs of any kind yet and has not crowed? He has the big curl on his tail and a large comb. The hens are ignoring him and he is very timid of them. He has ONLY ever been with other clutchmate roos so he may just not be sure of the opposite sex yet.

My question is are the australorps slow to mature or could this actually be a hen? Surely he would crow by now??

Sorry, wish i could help

I don't have an australorp roo bought one but SHE's doing great as a hen. I do have lots of Roosters most don't ever crow they are the silent type and no doubt about them being a roo.ages in my bachelor pad are 4 months to 3 years 3 out of 9 crow.
very possible he's not as old as you were told or he's a late bloomer as well.
You will know if you find an egg under "him" if it's a year old pullet/hen it should be laying real well for you...but the description of the tail and comb sounds rooish.

Can you post a picture of him(or her)?

Some Australorp hens have waddles and combs.
Maybe this person saw the waddles and combs and thought it was a roo and decided to get rid of it?

Regardless, lets see some pics

If it is a year old and still "gangly" looking..wonder if maybe it's a Jersey Giant Roo..they take a long time to mature.
Check the color of his feet on the bottom..Jerseys are yellow..Australorps are pink.

I will check his feet. He does have that green irridescent on his wings. Today I did notice a little protrusion on his legs where there is a start of spurs.

I know my red sex link roo was at least trying to crow by what seems to be this guys age, but maybe he will never crow or "grow a pair" as a friend of mine says, LOL!

I can get a picture of him maybe tomorrow.

Thanks so much for your help........
