Why is "bumping" not allowed? I don't think on less important topics it is necessarry but when someone has an important question and no one who is online replies because they don't know the answer, our posts get shoved down the board and basically ignored or lost. I've seen some very important questions go by the wayside because those on at that moment in time don't know the answer. I've gotten to where I'll just do a reply saying "I don't know" to try and get back in front of everyone else's eyes.

Bumping also implies that everyone reading the forum is a blind idiot and can't see your post. Very often people simply do not have an answer so they choose not to respond.

But, some people go ape and chain bump their posts and it drives everyone crazy. That's why it's against the rules. We have to use some discretion. If someone bumps a post a day later because it's fallen off the first page, I'd rather they 'bumped' that than start a brand new thread stating the same thing as the first.

There is a lot of grey area and we do our best to navigate the minefield.

I really can't say either way. If it's fallen off the first page, maybe OK? But if it's like 5 minutes later, then it probably is a bump.

Each moderator will take his or her own actions, based on the person's past behavior. I got tons of reports yesterday on borderline bumps. It's not easy. Some people are flagrant, others just uncertain.
