Question on coloring of Marans chicks

Are all strains of Marans, French Copper, Cuckoo, Silver, etc. the same color dark color as chicks?

No - Cuckoo marans are mostly black as chicks, then they feather in barred. My Wheaten Marans looked like chipmunks when they hatched. It all depends on the variety.

What about French Copper Marans? What do they look like as chicks?

MY FBCM are black with some white on the chest and some on wings tips

Thanks for the info. I'm a bit miffed now. I bought some French Black Copper Maran eggs off ebay, and turns out the chicks are not all French Copper. GRRRRRRR!

Some lines of BC's throw wheaten chicks which start out yellow....is that what you got?

The ones I got are light brown with dark brown stripes on their backs. Like little chipmunks. If they didnt hatch from brown eggs you would think they were Ameraucanas.

So I got 2 gene lines, one are pure Wade Jean and the other are Wade Jean crossed with something else. At 2 weeks old some have pure black wing feathers (with the token white tip feather) and sone have partridge-looking brown/black feathers on their wings instead of flat black. So, is this because of the two gene pools and which are which? Does the Wade Jean line have brown in them or are they plain black?
