Hi. I'm wondering if anyone out there has ever used these cones?

http://www.cconly.com/processing/funnels__killing_cone

If so, which ones did you use for your CX? I see the range for dressed weight on the one for the standard cornish (B2) overlaps those for Jumbo Cornish (M3), plus the lower weight for the CX seems a bit on the large size to be the low weight. I'm concerned about buying the first and the birds won't fit, or the second and the smaller birds fall through.

Never having raised these, or used a professional style cone, I have no idea what to expect.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Yes and for me they didnt work at all...it was like trying to fit a basketball into a tube made for golf balls...but what did work for me was milk jugs! They were wide enough for the whole bird...I cut off bottom of jugs and widened the top where the head should come out...worked like a charm and theybwere free ...well after we drank the 6 gallons of milk!!! Disposable too!!! ( to some extent)

I never tried them, but I use small highway cones that I purchase at a local hardware store. I made up a ladder looking thing that supports the cones/chickens. I can do 3 at a time which is a good pace for me. My birds come in all sorts of different sizes, small to large. I haven't have any slip through the cones, but I have had a few over fill the cones. I have learned a few tricks in positioning them in the cones so they don't go anywhere.

I made some out of 8" duct pipe and rivets. I didnt make them quite big enough around though. I didn't realize how fat these meaties were! Gonna make some bigger ones today. You can get a piece of 8' x 60" duct pipe at Lowes for 10 bucks. You can make 4 or 5 cones out of one stick. Alot cheaper to make your own.

Wow! Good job!

Daniel, how old was the CX in the cone, and how much did he weigh? I'm thinking your cone looks like the B2 in my link so maybe I should go with the M3.

And how come I've never seen you in the Okies thread? You know about POOPS swap coming up on Saturday, right?

I seen a neat idea that I,m gonna try. Those orange traffic cones used by highways dept. Just gotta cut some of the top off to make hole a little bigger.Might be good for us people trying to save a bit of money. No need buy from the feed stores. They charge so much for stuff up here in the Yukon.

Thanks, but I've done plenty of home made, including the milk jug rout, but I'm trying to put together a more professional setup. I'll be doing 100 or so at a time, and customers are invited to watch the processing. So, while I'm Okie through and through, I'd like my setup to at least LOOK a little less Okie than I do. :)

Any input on the linked cones would be greatly appreciated. Which of those do y'all think would work best, at least by their looks? Here is the pic on the link...

This link shows a very professional end product, and also includes dimentions for CX cone sizes. I was able to make several for the cost of one commercial unit with the shipping costs.

Okay, that is what I am looking for. From the linked source:

For the Cornish cross you could make a cone 18 inches tall, with a 5 inch botttom opening and 12 inch top opening. That would be a pattern 18 inches tall, 17 inches wide on the narrow side and 39 inches on the long side.

The basic formula I use is diameter of the opening (D) multiplied by Pi (3.14) plus 1.5 to 2 inches. [ (D x Pi) + 1.5 ] That gives you the length of the metal for the opening plus an overlap to fasten the two sides with.

I'm thinking about cutting up some of the free buckets I get and making some plastic kill cones with them. I could weld the cone's seam with a scrap piece of the plastic and a pocket torch. Then I'd have a kill cone with no overlapping seam. It would be much easier to clean.
Looks like the M3 is the closest to the recommended dimensions. From my link above...

"KC-M3 4.5 X 12 X 15"

So... M3, it is, with maybe one B2 for DP roos.

Thanks for the excellent information. With a full time job, 50 layers, 100 pullets, 250+ CX at various stages of development, plus sales, I'm way too busy to build something like that right now, even if I had the necessary skills. Wish I did, though.
