I went to my feed store the other day and asked for DE for my chickens (which I purchased there as well). They sold me a product called AniMed Diatomaceous Earth:

I read the label and could not see "food grade" on it and asked her if this was the DE to use for my chickens...she said yes. When I got it home and opened the jug up it is very very fine granules! Got online and checked for AniMed DE and it appears that this form of DE is for a food supplement for horses!

Question: Did I get the wrong DE to use? I know, I know...I've probably already answered my own question, but wanted to make sure.

Help please, and thank you!

I don't know if you got the right one but I bet you paid more for it. I get 20# food grade for $12
How would you know if I paid more for it...I didn't mention price at all. My question is about whether I purchased the correct DE for my chickens.

I was just making a comment. I thought, MAYBE you could save a little money. Items sold for horses can often be more expensive. I will make note not to comment on your threads again . Good day

Also wonders what your goal for using DE is?
Are the granules easily crushed?

Wonders if they have processed it somehow to granulize it for dust reduction, without adding any ingredients.
Image zoom on amazon shows 100% DE.

My feed store has it available in bulk for a dollar a pound, they scoop and bag however much you want.
I only use it in the bottoms of the nest boxes under the straw as it only works when bone dry for pest desiccation.

I would think if it is an animal food additive then it is food grade and fine enough/safe enough in texture for dusting your birds.

Here is their website [ http://www.animedproducts.com/welcome.html ] - perhaps you could e-mail them to confirm, here is an Ask-A-Vet link: http://www.animedproducts.com/askthevet.html

Or go the old fashioned way:

Did you ever find out if this was ok to use? I am going through the same situation.
