Question on duck sexuality

so I have a strange question. I have noticed a lot of call/ bantam ducks are kept in pairs, but full size ducks are are kept in much larger numbers of females to one male. Does this mean that call/ bantams are less sexual or just less sexually aggressive than full size males or have I missed something?

i always figured it was just to breed specific pairs of show birds and keep the quality

Ignorant people keep pairs of Calls in tiny pens to breed type. I breed for colour and mine all live happily in one big pen. One Drake to over 4 hens..

Good to know, I didn’t want to have an oven bred hen or anything and I can’t picture keeping them in a tiny pens. I am all about giving them as much space as I can.

All of my full sized ducks free range and I have no set male to female ratio. In fact, one of the groups is a trio of two males and one female and they get along fine.

I keep my pair in a pen because I don't want full-sized ducks mating with her.

I also worry about hawks, so my pair live in a smallish pen under a big tree where they are pretty safe from the hawks. If I cut them loose in the yard with the rest of the ducks they would killed by a hawk very quickly.

Call ducks seem to naturally pair off, much like wild mallards. The gal that gave me mine last year has a whole mess of them, and never pays much mind to the ratio of hens to drakes. Hers (and mine) don't abuse the ladies the same way standard ducks do. They may tussle amongst themselves, which is fine, so long as they leave my hens alone!

Personally, I can't stand having more than one standard drake regardless of how many hens I have. They gang rape the hens, and I have even had one of my hens killed by them. These ducks have a huge coop at night and pastured on a creek during the day. Never again. I butcher them as soon as they hit 6 months.

Calls don't naturally pair off ever.. one Drake is all theirs to enjoy and he happily serves them all...
