Can someone please tell me whether I can ferment chicken feed that has oyster shell inside of it? The food I just bought is called Super Egg, and it has oyster shell mixed into the feed. Just wondering if it’s safe to ferment with the oyster shell.

Yes. It is fine. The oyster shell will not ferment, but that is fine. Just think of it like you are fermenting feed with little bits of rock in it. If anything, the slightly acidic ferment mix will soften the calcium a bit. But that is fine. Makes it easier for the chicken to use.

That is really low protein though. Are you aware of that?

I absolutely agree.
Very low.
I’ve never seen a feed lower than 16-17%.
I feed my birds 20% protein.

Yes, I just noticed that. I could have sworn that the feed store sign said it was 16% protein. That’s upsetting! Thankfully, I have a bag of Nutrena All Flock that is 20% Protein. I’ll probably end up giving a little of this food each day until it’s gone and not purchase again. :hmm

Any good feed store will take back a bag that is just newly opened. Mistakes get made .. both ways. If the sign said 16% it was either wrong .. or in the wrong spot.

I do like the mini-pellet aspect of it. But that is about all it has going for it.....

Yes, I really liked that it was a mini pellet. I should have put on my glasses to see the label. I was just relying on the employee behind the counter that was saying it was a great food. :barnie
