Ursus, seems like your original question still hasn't been addressed. Just my thoughts, but seems like you could switch to an infrared heat bulb since it's not as bright. Once your chicks are fully feathered and you hit the week where the temp regulation is no longer necessary, I think you could actually move their pen into your coop. Seems like I read that after they are fully feathered they will make it as long as the night time temps stay above 40. Somebody will correct me on that if I'm WAY WRONG.
