Question on pools

I use a stock tank that i got at TSC it was a 110 gal and it was such a pain and tall too, so my dh cut it in half and it's a great pool for the ducks, they like it alot better than when it was the 110 gallon size. it does have a drain plug but I use the hose to drain it out it's easier for me.

I have two kiddie poolS plus a 300 gallon stock tank with a drain in it. However, I have yet to drain the stock tank after a couple of months... I just flood it every few days to de-murkify the water some. The kiddie pools are emptied and refilled every two days.

The yard is terraced, so the stock tank sits next to a terrace, allowing the waterfowl to walk into it.

scratch'n'peck :

Actually ponds for water fowl as big as 30 feet wide should really have some running water through them and/or a filter and /or be drained regularly. It sounds like most folks go with the tipping and filling the kiddie pool. I know they get it mucky pretty fast, but reasonably clean water is an important part of duck grooming and keeping their nose and eyes clear.

thank goodness i have a spring and a well because when 10 scovies and a goose get into the stock tank everyday I have to run water in it every evening till the water runs clear, would hate to see what my water bill would be if i didn't.

I have two kiddie pools that I dump about twice a week and refill. The water gets pretty nasty but I just dont have the time to do it daily nor do I want the water bill. I dont think youd want to bury the pool where you cant drain it. In just 4 or 5 days sometimes my pools get ALOT of poop in them when I dump them. If you cant dump em how do you get that out? I told my wife after we first took the duckies out to the barn when they were a month or so old... "hey I invited these 9 chicks over for a pool party and they all pooped in the pool:(" Anyway, the ducks still swim on the water all day even if you dont keep it crystal cleaar by dumping it daily. Id just top it off each day then dump it every few days, saves work and water, and then its really fun watching them flap around in there when they get the fresh stuff. Maybe it sounds bad to the other duck lovers but I figure they dont go anywhere so they can do without showering every single day heh.

You could probably get a larger pool like you want and kinda dig it into the ground, but first research how to put a big drain hole in it so you can empty it and rinse it out. I don't know how to do it but research on here; I am sure someone knows! Good luck with your lucky ducks.

I use a smaller, more manageable sheep tank and keep it inside the barn. I have to eventually use a tank heater on it too, but for now in Minnesota, the kiddie pool is empty in the barn, the sheep tank filled, supervised swimming only, and covered with plywood in between use. It hasn't froze yet......

I don't know about Illinois but we've already had freezing temps a couple of times already and the stock tank I mentioned in post 7 worked just fine. When it was frozen, I just gave it a swift kick on the side to dislodge the ice layer and then pulled it out of the top in one big piece.

I clean mine every 2 or 3 days. I mean when you think of the gross ponds birds swim and eat out of that are in nature, 3 to 5 day old pool water sure won't hurt the domestics. At least my ducks have no issues.
