Question regarding giant jerseys & nesting boxes

hi ◡̈ I’ve got 3 giant jerseys & 3 Wyandotte’s , my plan was to use 5 gallon buckets laid on their side for nesting boxes, will that be to small for my giant girls? Will my Wyandotte’s like bigger boxes? Should I do and combination of big and small boxes?

I have brahmas....who like to cram into nest boxes 12 x 12 x 8. They aren't much smaller than giants. 5 gallon buckets are a bit larger. Personally, I think it's a great idea.

I would not use the buckets. They are tight for large chickens and don't have a flat surface to stand on. Chickens stand up when they lay eggs. I recommend at least 14" tall and 12" wide for large breeds.

However, when chickens build nests on the ground, they scoop a "cup" into the dirt that the eggs lay in. The hen's feet are on the lip of the cup and she crouches down there to incubate/brood. The curve would actually help with that. The only issue: a lip for the hen's feet. Could easily be solved my screwing a couple strips into the side walls inside the bucket. 1 x 1/2 running from bucket lip to bottom 1/3 around the bucket would likely work.

Yes, but the curved sides make the height even smaller.

They will litterally lay anywhere. Mine lay on shelves, desks, in large tubs, in planters.
