Question regarding Red-Sexlinks

Yes, I guess it would work... I'll let you know in a week!

I primarily started the cross since I suck at sexing chicks, but if they're better layers for it, then so be it!

I have a couple of barred rocks in with him, too, just to see what we get.

I may still order that RIR roo chick on my next meatbird order.

Thanks RR!

Oh and another thing, I had a pen set-up for Black sexlinks last season with a RIR roo and Barred Rock hens and (I only used this roo for a couple hatches) but I don't think I ever hatched any roos with him, they were all girls, but I did hatch roos with the Buff Orp roo I was using before him.

So it's possible you could have only hatched pullets.

If you've got Barred Rocks with him, you'll get black sexlinks regardless of what he is. You can use any color roo on barred hens to get Black sexlinks as long as he's not barred and not dominant white.

That would be awesome!! LOL! Do I dare hope?!?!

This is my first time working the genetics like this. So a buff orpington crossed with a barred rock gives golden sexlinks? Hmmm.... Might have to just get me a pen of barred rock girls and put a BO and a RIR in with them.

Then no matter what, I'd know what was hatching!

No, they were black sexlinks from the buff roo on the barred hens, anything with barred hens will give black sexlinks ( solid females and barred males). But they did have more buff color in them than normal black sexlinks from a RIR roo.

Here is what I got from the Buff Orp X Barred Rock cross. The females are black and gold, the males are black and silver/barred.

Right... sorry, got my breeds mixed up. But I sure like the looks of those hens!! Thank you so much for posting the photos! Visuals help.

Maybe I'll change that order to a BO roo instead. LOL! I just need to be able to sex them at birth!! No one up here wants to mess with roos!

I would go with a BO roo too, you could use him for Black Sexlinks on the barred Rock hens, and for red sexlind with the Delaware hens, heck, even with your Light Brahma and Silver Grey Dorking hens if you want. The Dorking cross may be a bit harder to sex at hatch, IDK I've never saw that cross before but it would work since the buff is gold and the hens are silver.

OK and here's a few more ideas before I go to bed.

Your sig line says you have BBS Orps, so cross a Splash Orp roo with the Barred hens and that will give you blue sexlinks, ( blue females and blue barred males)

Or

Cross an Ameraucana roo on the barred hens and that will give you sexlinked easter eggers.

Oh and a wheaten or better yet a blue wheaten Ameraucana would also work for crossing with the delawares and such to give red sexlined easter eggers. The BBS Orps would not work though.

OMG... I love the way you think! LOL! I have a young Splash Orpington cockerel that I could use. I have about 10 barred rock hens, though they're almost 2 years old now. So I need to get a few more BRs, and then put all my extra roos in with them. LOL! (j/k) Maybe just a few. I don't have a BO roo. Hens, but no roo. No extra LB roos, though that may change soon. Blue wheaten Ameraucana roo... what about a BC Marans?

Now look what you've started...

I edited my previous post in case you didn't see while you were typeing, the Blue Wheaten Ameraucana would also work for the Red Sexlinks as well as the black sexlinks and they would all be Easter Eggers that way.

The BC Marans roo would work for the Black Sexlinks, that should make their eggs darker too, but I wouldn't use him for the red sexlinks.

Isn't genetics just awesome ?
