no, but we built our coop to a good size. We have since added an 'addition' for them and a poop board will be next. I think it gives them more room and with regular maintance of the poop board, I'll be using less wood chips/straw therefore saving more money. We've been going through the wood chips like crazy. Soon as the weather stays steady, thats what we're doing. I recommend it and I don't have one YET.......
It's just a choice. Some people use them and some people don't. It just depends on what you like and how you want to manage your coop. Most people either love them or hate them.
You don't really NEED anything...other than a place for the chickens to get out of the elements. How big is your coop? Do you plan on weekly cleaning of the whole coop? If you only have a couple of chickens and a small coop, cleaning the coop floor would be just as easy as cleaning a poop or droppings board. If you have 10+ chickens, cleaning the droppings board a few times a week is a lot easier than cleaning an 8x8 or bigger coop every week. It's all a matter of size, numbers, and preference. I personally love my droppings board for my 13 girls in an 8x8 coop.
